What began with “Two Tickets to Dubrovnik” as a single novel, developed into a tetralogy, with the publishing of “A View from the Languedoc”, “To the East” and now, finally, “The Final Programme”. It has taken four years and much research and effort but it is done…and to my satisfaction. Apart from the challenges of creating my characters and storyline, I had to read books on the history of Dubrovnik and on The Way of Saint James (in French) to get a complete feel for the story behind the beautiful, historic city. I also had to generate genealogical charts spanning over three centuries to complete the picture. I found great satisfaction in being able to use the history of the Balkans as a backdrop for the story, along with my knowledge of wine and wine producing areas around the world from my many years working in the industry. The characters and their story are fictional but the backdrop is real, and covers a thousand years of history, much of which was new to me and will be new to most of my readers. The series is not designed to be an educational piece but is one nevertheless, because of the stories behind the story. For anyone interested in reading more about the history of Dubrovnik and the Ragusan Empire, I can strongly recommend Robin Harris’s book on the subject. For more on Les Chemins de Saint-Jacques (The Way of Saint James), my reference by Jean Bourdarias and Michel Wasielewski is great for those who can read French but there are many other English references available. I hope that you enjoy the books.
